European Remembrance Project „NICE: Nobody Ignores the Charter of Europe”

Project „NICE: Nobody Ignores the Charter of Europe” seeks to explore topic of European memory and history with special interest in EU perspective and fundamental rights. Project is created by 3 organizations from 3 European countries – Lithuania, Latvia and Italy.

Aims of the project:
1. to raise awareness of citizens about important historical event in 2000 – Proclamation of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (also comparing with European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms) which ensured economic, political and social rights for EU citizens and residents.
2. to promote cross-sectoral cooperation by involving into project municipalities, libraries, universities /schools/(youth) NGOs, youth centers and in this way ensure visibility and success for the project.
3. to create network between Southern and Eastern European countries in order to work together for the benefits of EU and disseminate its values.

Activities:
NICE – Nobody Ignores the Charter of Europe was implemented from 4th of January, 2021 until 3rd of July, 2023 (30 months).
Because of insecurities and risks due to COVID-19 pandemics, core project’s activities (international conferences) were postponed until country regulations allowed to arrange wider scope gatherings.
This historical turning point of Anniversary of Proclamation of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights served as a great occasion for debates and analysis of EU law. The project included 2 international events (23rd March, 2022 and 17th May, 2022) for citizens from all backgrounds in cities across Europe and a final event on 22nd September 2022.

Participants in international events reflected on and debated the meaning of Proclamation of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in 2000 and today.
Project included such activities as:
– public debates about separate parts of EU Charter and comparing with European Convention.
– interview research with local citizens.
– photo exhibition each photo portraying separate point of EU Charter.

Results:
Final goal of project was to promote achievements of EU law regulation process and to advance future of further development. The network of SE and EE countries was created as a result which continues in further project partnerships and collaborations. About 225 direct and almost 10 000 indirect participants were involved in the project.
